The first political party dedicated to defending and protecting animal welfare has been created. Long confined to a human-machine relationship, the relationship between humans and animals has been constantly evolving in recent years. October 28, 2002, remains a pivotal date for the animal welfare party . Indeed, it marks the founding of the first political party in the Netherlands dedicated to defending and protecting animal welfare and their rights. Following its lead, many countries have prioritized animal welfare. Is the world on the verge of witnessing an international turning point? The Political Party for Animals originated in the Netherlands. Animal rights and welfare are among its primary objectives. While the party does not seek power, it hopes to promote its convictions and influence other political parties. It is the first political party in the world to win seats in parliament with a platform focused primarily on animal rights. Animal welfare has become a major issue in recent years. This is primarily because animals are no longer seen as machines, but as sentient beings in their own right. Every animal can feel and should live without suffering for as long as possible. However, the industrial world and the world of rampant consumerism prevent this.

History of the creation of the animal political party

This political party for animals was founded on October 28, 2002, by Marianne Thieme . Thieme established the Party for the Animals with the help of other animal rights activists. A Dutch lawyer, she completed part of her studies at the Sorbonne in Paris. In the 2003 parliamentary elections, she headed her party's list and won two seats in the second chamber of the States General in 2006. A vegetarian for many years, she is also the author of numerous texts on animal rights. The party's founder is therefore deeply committed to the cause she champions. In the March 2017 general elections, the party won three additional seats, bringing its total to five.

Why create a party for animals?

More and more people are convinced that animal protection is a major issue in our modern society. Members of Parliament receive more mail about animals than on any other subject. Yet, animals are poorly protected by Parliament. Although concern for animals is a general priority, this is not reflected in the policies of most political parties worldwide. Worse, some politicians are still convinced that traditions like bullfighting are necessary and do no harm to animals, while in reality, millions of animals continue to suffer in unacceptable conditions. Supporting the Animal Welfare Party shows politicians from other parties how much the public cares about animal welfare, and this can influence their policies and actions. The Animal Welfare Party envisions a world in which animals are not exploited, but are seen and treated as sentient beings.

What are the missions of the first political party dedicated to defending and protecting animal welfare?

Its mission is to establish a voice for animals through a dedicated political party that emphasizes respect and compassion for all. Their constitution is based on the ethics of respect for life. Like human beings, they believe that non-human animals have an interest in being alive, experiencing positive mental states, and avoiding suffering, illness, and death. They believe that human beings have an obligation to respect and protect the interests of non-human animals. This will lead to a more compassionate and healthy society, which will also benefit humans. After all, isn't it said that the greatest sociopaths or criminals train primarily on animals before attacking their human victims? Or that we don't have two hearts: one for humans and one for animals? This party also wants to:
  • Implement a licensing or permit system for pets. Mandatory requirements would include minimum age limits (e.g., 18 years) for permit holders and successful completion of an animal protection certificate (as is the case, for example, in Switzerland), appropriate to the species in question.
  • Annual license maintenance would require mandatory sterilization of cats and dogs at sexual maturity or before, except in very special circumstances.
  • Improve legislation and regulations against animal neglect and abuse by strengthening and expanding police powers, increasing penalties for offenders, and developing public educational programs regarding responsible pet care.
Despite our awe at the animal world, we perpetrate a massacre on a colossal scale: 60 billion land animals and 1 trillion marine animals die every year for our consumption or activities. That's two million animals per minute. As many deaths per week as the number of human beings killed in all the wars in human history. Will a political party for animals help reduce the intensive exploitation of animals?
