The story of Biofood and the Green Guarantee label
The Green Guarantee cannot be discussed without mentioning the history of the Biofood company. Indeed, the brand's founder, Mr. Wiebe Bijlsma, witnessed firsthand the harmful effects of industrial kibble on our canine and feline friends. At the time, he was working for one of the largest dog and cat food manufacturers in the Netherlands.
Being close to nature, he couldn't imagine feeding his animals the same way, knowing that some kibble caused dermatological, digestive, or even breath problems. After several years of market research, in 1989 he founded his own pet food brand with the idea of always using natural ingredients. This was still uncommon at the time.
The BF Petfood brand has 30 years of experience developing products for dogs and cats made with naturally sourced ingredients. It's not a brand that's simply jumping on the natural trend; it's the brand that pioneered it. To further this commitment, BIOFOOD created its own "Green Guarantee" label to provide dog and cat owners with a genuine guarantee of quality.
What is a Guarantee?
A guarantee aims to reassure the consumer about their purchase. It is therefore an informational measure that ensures the customer knows what they are buying, but it is also a sign of the brand's responsibility.
Indeed, if a product sold were to be non-compliant, the consumer could then contact the supplier in order to, for example:
- replace the purchased product
- obtain a refund for the product
Of course, this depends on the problem, the circumstances, and the involvement of the supplier or brand. A guarantee is therefore a way for the brand to take responsibility for what it offers its consumers.
The BIOFOOD Green Guarantee
Biofood has therefore created its own guarantee, the "GROEN" (green in Dutch) label, which is based on the brand's own convictions regarding the products used and on the law. To offer the healthiest products possible, the guarantee is based on several criteria.
100% natural
The 100% natural approach so dear to BIOFOOD means not using genetically modified organisms. Using GMOs would be detrimental to biodiversity, as their impact is enormous: they are toxic to non-target organisms and insects, and they threaten ecosystems. Furthermore, GMOs have a harmful impact on health. This means that plants or meat derived from GMOs used in certain products can negatively affect the health of the animal that consumes them.
100% natural also means that the only additives used are of natural origin and not chemical. Many BF Petfood products use natural vitamin E. Vitamin E's main role is as an antioxidant. It helps fight cell aging and oxidative stress. The use of rosemary in the kibble is beneficial. It promotes digestion in dogs and cats, has antibacterial properties that aid skin healing, and helps prevent kidney stones. It also acts as a natural stress reliever and fatigue reducer. All of this without harming the dog's health or causing addiction.
High-quality products
The BIOFOOD Green Guarantee ensures the high quality of all products used, especially meats. These are carefully selected from start to finish to provide cats and dogs with a healthy and balanced diet. The meats are fresh and then dehydrated and processed in specialized facilities. The use of animal oils and fats allows the animals that consume them to maintain healthy skin and coats free from dermatological problems. These oils and fats are also preserved in the natural antioxidant vitamin E.
Monitoring and respecting animal welfare
BIOFOOD certifies that its products are respectful of animals and nature, even within a complex industrial context. It makes sense that choosing to produce natural foods without using biochemicals or GMOs helps to best preserve our environment, as well as its flora and fauna.
