Toxic Foods for Dogs: The Complete List

While most of us know that chocolate is toxic to dogs, it's also important to know that many other foods can be dangerous for our furry friends. Here's a complete list of foods toxic to dogs!

Foods are considered toxic when they contain a substance that can cause health problems. These are generally very common foods that we all have in our kitchens, so be careful!

Chocolate

This toxic food for dogs is well-known. Its toxicity comes from theobromine, a compound that can disrupt and stimulate the heart rhythm. The theobromine content, and therefore the toxicity, depends on the type of chocolate. Dark chocolate is the richest in theobromine and therefore the most dangerous. 60g of dark chocolate is enough to kill a 10kg dog. Symptoms of poisoning generally appear within hours of ingestion. The dog may experience vomiting, intense thirst, restlessness, and even tremors.

The macadamia nut

This ingredient, frequently used in baking, has a phosphorus content that is too high for animals. Poisoning can occur at levels as low as 2.2 grams per kilogram. Symptoms of poisoning include fever, lethargy, and vomiting.

Grapes (fresh or dried)

Another ingredient commonly found in cooking. The toxic substance contained in grapes is still unknown, but it is known to be toxic at a concentration of 10 grams per kilogram. It can cause digestive symptoms and kidney failure. Dried grapes are even more toxic than fresh grapes.

The potato (raw)

Who would imagine that potatoes pose a danger to dogs? Yet, they are indeed an ingredient considered toxic to dogs! Raw, sprouted, or even green potatoes are dangerous because they contain solanine. They are toxic in amounts exceeding 30g. Symptoms of potato poisoning include digestive and neurological problems.
However, once cooked, the potato no longer presents any danger.

The lawyer

In an avocado, everything is toxic: the leaves, the pit, and the fruit. Avocado consumption in dogs can cause digestive problems. It can also lead to cardiovascular and respiratory issues. If you suspect your dog has eaten avocado, it is essential to consult a veterinarian immediately. Don't wait for symptoms to appear; prevention is better than cure.

Egg white

The yolk is fine. However, the egg white contains avidin, a substance that can destroy vitamin B8 (also known as biotin). This vitamin is essential for a dog's metabolism, so it's best to avoid giving it to them.

Onion, shallot, garlic, leek

These foods are toxic at levels of 5 to 10g per kilo.

They cause the destruction of red blood cells. Their consumption leads to digestive and respiratory symptoms, as well as severe fatigue. Poisoning can also cause anemia.

Food is not the only thing that can be toxic; some drinks can also be potentially dangerous for dogs.

Lactose-based drinks

Dogs don't digest lactose very well. Consuming lactose can therefore cause digestive problems such as diarrhea. It's best to avoid giving milk to your dog.

Coffee and tea

Coffee and tea contain an alkaloid, a molecule composed of theobromine and theophylline, so they have the same effects as chocolate.

Alcohol

Alcohol, that is to say ethanol, is contained in alcoholic beverages, but it is also present in fermented (rotten) fruits and in raw pasta.

Alcoholic beverages can attract dogs because of their sweet taste. Ethanol can cause nervous system disorders. A dose of 15 ml per kilogram of body weight is enough to cause poisoning.

To complete this list, we can add that seeds and pits are generally toxic foods and it is best to avoid giving them to your dog.
Furthermore, cooked bones, being weakened by cooking, should also be avoided. They can splinter easily, creating a risk of stomach perforation. In addition, these splinters can become lodged in the dog's teeth. As for poultry, duck, and rabbit bones, they should never be given, even raw.

If you think your dog has ingested one of these foods, consult your veterinarian immediately!
